SC Codes welcomes Morgan Boykin as new Volunteer & Community Coordinator

COLUMBIA, S.C. – (October 20th, 2020) – SC Codes, a statewide program aimed at providing free access to code education, today announced Morgan Boykin as its new volunteer & community coordinator. The program currently offers nine free modules on its platform, with free content available to anyone in the state with an interest in computer programming.

Prior to joining SC Codes, Boykin served as Director of Community Programs & Engagement at Carolina Youth Coalition in Columbia, SC.  Morgan holds a B.A. in Special Education from Bennett College and a M.Ed. in Divergent Learning from Columbia College School of Education. Bringing experience from the public school setting and non-profit sector, Morgan has played a lead role in developing programming through community based partnerships and volunteer engagement.

Morgan began her career in education in Richland Two School District (Columbia, South Carolina) teaching remedial reading and mathematics. Morgan went on to join Girl Scouts of South Carolina as Manager of Program Delivery, responsible for cultivating community partnerships, volunteer management and developing STEM curriculum. She oversaw the program delivery for twenty-two counties in South Carolina in regards to quality specifications, staff delivery and risk management. Morgan then joined Carolina Youth Coalition as Director of Community Programs and Engagement with a focus on Fellow and volunteer recruitment, community partnerships and internal programming. Guided by the belief that every student deserves an equal opportunity at success, Morgan maintains active membership in community organizations with similar missions including: The Junior League, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society.

“I am thrilled to support the mission of SC Codes through building a passionate volunteer base throughout the state,” said Boykin. “There are so many individuals looking to share their time and talents with others and it is a real privilege to make those connections for our learners. South Carolina has a tremendous opportunity to increase its tech workforce and I look forward to being a part of this movement!”

“Morgan brings a wealth of non-profit volunteer recruitment and community engagement experience to the SC Codes team and we are so excited to have her joining us” says SC Codes program director, Kaity Miller. “Morgan will undoubtedly increase SC Codes’ reach and impact through strengthening our volunteer network, increasing engagement with learners on the free platform, and developing industry relationships throughout the state.”

SC Codes is helping upskill the workforce in hopes of filling the void of available technology jobs in South Carolina. At last count, there were nearly 10,000 jobs for software developers in South Carolina. According to CompTIA’s 2020 Cyberstates report, employment in the tech industry expanded by over 5,000 jobs in 2019 and the tech sector represents 6% of South Carolina’s economy.

SC Codes was launched in September 2018 and now has nearly 8,000 registered users statewide. The platform allows for 24/7 access to free online curriculum for any interested resident. For more information, visit sccodes.org.
