New Partnership Alert: Palmetto Innovation Center

Volunteer Community Coordinator, Morgan Boykin, leading a Information Session at Palmetto Innovation Center

This summer, SC Codes launched a partnership with Palmetto Innovation Center located in Barnwell, South Carolina. Palmetto Innovation Center seeks to support entrepreneurs, creators, businesses, organizations, and regional industries with digital tools, space, and training efforts to thrive in an ever-changing modern economy. In collaboration with the center, SC Codes will provide information sessions, coding courses and mentorship opportunities free to residents in Barnwell and surrounding communities. Volunteer and Community Coordinator, Morgan Boykin looks forward to the partnership to “provide tech education to areas that are sometimes left out of the tech conversation in the State.”

“It was really encouraging to see the interest in our first information session. It shows that people are looking towards coding as a career path and eager to be connected to tools to help them get there” Boykin added. Currently, there are over 1,000 open software developer positions available in South Carolina with over 200 of them considered “entry” or “mid-level.” (Source: Indeed)  Students on the SC Codes platform can not only prepare technically for these positions but can train in the soft skills for these positions through SC Codes’ Mentorship Program. Palmetto Innovation Center is excited to serve as a brick and mortar space for programming and connection to SC Codes resources in their  community.

On August 24th at 6:00 PM, Palmetto Innovation Center will be a satellite host for the entry-level course, JavaScript Concepts. Participants will gather at the center and take the virtual class alongside their community members and learners from across the state. The class will be taught by professional software developer and SC Codes’ Technical Director, Alex Martin. Registration is free and open to all South Carolina residents. “We are extremely excited to be able to host the SC Codes program for free at our facility,” said Bob Snead, Program coordinator of the Palmetto Innovation Center. “Software development jobs are transformative for those living in our service area, with many entry level jobs nearly tripling the median income of our region. We can’t wait to help foster such careers for the students of our program, with the guidance of Barnwell native Edward Wald who is joining us as a volunteer mentor for our cohort. Edward has a passion for bringing people and technology together, and he will certainly help these students thrive.” As a programmer, visual designer, and human factors expert, Edward has over 20 years of technology consulting experience in high paced development environments for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. With a passion to help users with disabilities, Edward’s specific area of expertise focuses on helping companies deliver accessible compliant products supporting blind, deaf, and physically challenged computer users.
